They’re coming to get you Barbara… again! A new entree into George A. Romero‘s ‘of the Dead’ universe is coming! Though the famed father of the modern day zombie isn’t behind the wheel on this one. In all actuality, his son is. That’s right folks, Cameron Romero is following in his father’s footsteps by giving us ‘Night of the Living Dead: Origins.’ The film is set to be a prequel to one of the most famous zombie films of all time.

The younger Romero, Darrin Reed and Bryce C. Campbell all chipped in on writing the script. Radar Pictures has just come on to produce and will be joining Aldo LaPietra, Campbell, Reed and Romero on that end.

It seems as if the mystery of how the zombies will finally be answered as the film will be an origin story of how the events in the original ‘Night of the Living Dead’ came to be! The time period will be right in the middle of the Cold War “when one scientist tried to give the world its best hope for survival and instead unleashed its worst nightmare.” It’s not quite clear if the elder Romero has fully agreed that this is canon, but now that the movie is in the public domain it can really be open to anyone to work with.

The younger Romero stated:

“‘Origins’ is a great opportunity for me to continue the family tradition of creating haunting and ever-evolving depictions of the undead, and a great opportunity for Romero fans to see a story of zombie inception never portrayed before.”

I have no doubt he has his father’s blessing on this one.

Are you looking forward to having another Romero helm an ‘Of the Dead’ film? Are you excited to see how the zombie virus was finally created in this world? Or do you hope this doesn’t end up being canon as the mystery was half the fun. Share your thoughts below!
