CBS has just signed on Jeffrey Dean Morgan (‘Supernatural’,’Watchmen’) for when ‘Extant‘ returns this summer and heads in a new direction for the second season. With Halle Berry reprising her role as Molly Woods heading out into the world to try and find out more about what happened to her we’ll see her cross paths with Morgan’s character. It would appear that he is set to be the season’s male lead. She is going to need all the help she can get and it sounds like she may have found it with who Morgan will be playing.

On the show Morgan has been cast as JD Richter who is described as “a roguish womanizer and a cop of the future, a free-wheeling, hard-drinking and fearless, bordering on reckless mercenary/bounty hunter, mostly because he’s got nothing to lose. He is the everyman who thought he had seen everything until Molly Woods enters his life.” Morgan brings a lot of television acting experience to the table as aside from ‘Supernatural’ he also has starred in ‘Magic City’, ‘JAG’, and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ in recurring roles with plenty of shorter stints in between.

So what is Woods up to? For those who aren’t caught up this may be a bit of spoiler territory. It looks as if Woods has accidentally put all humanity in danger. Her goal is to not only find out more about what happened to herself but to track down her alien son to save us all. In fact, the only cast returning as season regulars are Pierce Gagnon who play’s Molly’s android son and Grace Gummer who was an assistant on the Humanichs Project. The rest of the cast are either not returning or will only be back for a couple of episodes.
