We’ve been reporting on and off that ‘The Goonies 2‘ was in the works for quite some time now and while there has been no recent news on where it is in production, we now we know why. Honestly, it sounds as if the delay has been entirely been from one key point and that is from everyone being unhappy with the script. The studio knows that they have to deliver a rock solid sequel for this film in order to have people interested and so far the writers set on the task have just not been up to the challenge.
In fact, the scripts have been so bad that producer Frank Marshall almost make it sound as if the fabled ‘The Goonies 2’ production might not just be delayed, but could in fact not happen at all if things continue at this pace.
He was first asked if a workable script was in place and he tried to brush off the question by saying “Not yet” but when pushed to expand he said the project can’t go forward until they have one.
“We don’t just do sequels to do them. The story has to be there. … You don’t want to disappoint the fans by just doing a schlocky movie. You want to do a real legitimate movie. It’s not going to be a sequel. In the Amblin spirit of Goonies, that’s what has to be.”
Actually, that sounds a little iffy to me. “It’s not going to be a sequel” is the key part of that quote that has me worried because if it isn’t a direct sequel it almost sounds like a reboot is on the table.
Obviously we don’t know if this was a slip up or if they are going in a different direction of the film. Common rumors and wish lists have put the film following either the now grown ups on a new adventure or seeing their kids follow in their footsteps. What does seem obvious from this is that whatever idea Steven Spielberg came up with must clearly not have been that great after all.
Are you okay with a sequel not happening? Do you think by this point we should at least have a script if they really had a solid idea of what to do on the table? Share your thoughts below!
