Around this time last year, even before ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ had even hit theaters, director Bryan Singer announced that 20th Century Fox had scheduled a sequel for 2016 called ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’. Since then, we were teased by the all-powerful mutant’s arrival in the post-credits scene in the most recent chapter of the Marvel mutant superhero franchise, but now we know who exactly will be playing the mighty Apocalypse when the film rolls around.

According to Deadline, the studio has just closed a deal for Oscar Isaac to star as the titular villain in the upcoming ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’. After his amazing breakout role in last year’s ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ as a talented yet unsuccessful folk singer trying to make it in 1961 Greenwich Village, the actor/singer landed a role in the highly anticipated ‘Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens’, but it’s still a complete mystery as to who he will be playing in a galaxy far, far away. His fans can check him out next in ‘A Most Violent Year’ opposite ‘Interstellar’ star Jessica Chastain, but readers of our fair site are probably stoked to hear more about Isaac as one of the most iconic foes of the X-Men.

Created by Louise Simonson and Jackson Guice, Apocalypse was born nearly 5000 years ago in Egypt and was dubbed En Sabah Nur or “the first one” because he is believed to be the first living being on Earth born with the X-gene. For millennia, he has proclaimed that he is a god and ruled over many civilizations with the help of his Four Horsemen. Now, he looks to conquer the 2016 box office in a comic book adaptation that X-fans have been dreaming about for decades.

As for Isaac, he’s an extremely talented actor that certainly has some buzz from a variety of circles right now, so it will be interesting to see him tackle one of the most intimidating villains in all of comic book history. It’s also uncertain how Singer, Simon Kinberg, Michael Dougherty, and Dan Harris have chosen to portray Apocalypse, but there’s a good chance that Isaac will have to start hitting the gym before production commences early next year.
