In many cases of novel to big screen adaptations, we see changes to characters and character arcs. They can have drastic changes to their lives and even deaths as pieces are moved around to better fit a script or to keep a major actor on screen longer. During an interview, Jai Courtney was asked about his character in ‘Insurgent‘ and his answer contained a very revealing spoiler!
This spoiler is potentially huge especially if you haven’t already read the sequel to ‘Divergent,‘ so I’m going to say if you want to be surprised, turn away now! If you have read the books or don’t care about what happens to characters, the surprise isn’t a big deal and you can continue on with no problems.
So what happens to Courtney’s character in ‘Insurgent’? The actor was asked if his character, Eric, would coincide with the character’s story arc in the books. His answer was very telling:
“As in, “Do I die?” Yes. Yeah there’s no spoilers there ’cause it was already written in a different medium, so I’m happy to say that. It’s cool, we just wrapped on that the other week.”
So there you have it folks! Apparently Courtney didn’t think this was much of a spoiler since the character’s fate was already written in the second book.
So if you haven’t read the books, you now know that Jai Courtney’s character is going to die in the next movie and if you have, than you’ll know that there are no changes from the novel for at least that portion of the arc.
On the one hand I completely appreciate that the film will be trying to stay close to the novel. On the other, that was a bit much of a spoiler for those going into the next movie having not read the books.
This was actually Courtney’s first time doing a follow up in a film and not only did he have fun making a second showing on a film but he also loved being able to play a darker character, “I didn’t realize how much I enjoyed being that cold and nasty. It’s good because he’s so dead. I wrestled with that originally, but that was a testament to [director Neil Burger’s] vision. You can throw different shades in there, but I was glad he pushed me to create the character the way he did ’cause it worked the second time around. It’s that subtle material, it’s quite fun to do stuff like that rather than make it so obvious.”
Are you happy to hear that ‘Insurgent’ is following the source material and that Courtney is going to bite the big one on screen?
