Simon Kinberg, who is in charge of the 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise, has just dropped some hints about ‘Deadpool‘ that fans will be excited to hear. It appears the Merc with the Mouth will be a part of their larger cinematic universe that is being created. This should get fans of the character to look forward to the film as Kinberg has stated that his goal was to “Be like Marvel” when it comes to the upcoming changes to the ‘X-Men’ cinematic universe.
In a recent interview while promoting the upcoming Blu-ray of ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past,’ Kinberg not only confirmed that the Deadpool movie would be part of the same continuity as the X-Men universe (which probably strengthens the lack of an R rating rumor) but that it was helping to lay the groundwork for something much bigger. When asked directly how ‘Deadpool’ could fit into the larger universe his answer on the upcoming movies is that “They do all feed into one another in the sense of wanting to tell this sort of massive story that can take place over multiple movies.”
Now, that really does sound like what Marvel is doing so it makes sense that they would try to mimic that method as they are using characters from the same universe, at least on the written page. Also there are so many mutants out there that between the X-Men, X-Force, New Mutants, X-Factor, and the slew of stand alone titles, iterations, alternate futures, and villains that this could be quite an easy task to do unlike how Sony has limited resources in the Spider-Man franchise.
Fox is specifically trying to kick things off with ‘X-Men: Apocalypse‘ which is also the bookend of a trilogy that began with ‘X-Men: First Class‘ and Kinsberg clarified that a little by saying:
“We are aware as we are plotting out Apocalypse and the other X-Men movies – both potential sequels in the future and standalone movies – and trying to build them all together so that there is a singularity of vision. And obviously a timeline that makes sense as well, because these movies all, well not all, but many of them take place in different time periods, so that all those things will link up and make sense for an audience.”
Even though I’d prefer Marvel just get the rights back to all of their characters, this at the very least sounds as if they are putting things together properly, unlike Fox’s other Marvel property, ‘Fantastic Four‘.
Are you excited to see how Deadpool will lead into future films and think that Fox has a good idea of what they are doing going forward? Would you prefer that Marvel get the rights back to the films?
