Greetings Toy Fans! Welcome to another jam-packed edition of Toy News Tuesday! The one weekly column right here on ScienceFiction.com where we seek out all of the news you need to know about any announcements and cool happenings in the toy industry and put them all in one easy to find place for you! This week there were quite a few big announcements, so let’s not waste any time and dive head first into the toy news for the week of August 26th, 2014!

Prepare For Doomsday

We’re going to kick off this week with a HUGE announcement for fans of Mattel’s DC Universe Classics line, which has sadly been in its death-throws for the better part of a year now as the final announced figures trickled out through MattyCollector.com’s online only subscription plans. Then, when all hope was lost and fans thought the final curtain was falling on the line with just two figures left to be released, Mattel goes and pulls the carpet out from under our feet with one GIGANTIC announcement… a final figure to end this line on the highest note possible! This week, Mattel revealed their plans to release ‘Doomsday Unleashed’, a massive figure that towers over nearly every other figure in this 6” scale toyline! This is a figure we were told was never going to happen, we would never see it and we should forget that they ever teased it’s potential release several years back.

Initially, Doomsday Unleashed was the ‘tier two’ reward figure if the DC Universe Classics online subscription service past their required minimum subscription amounts. Unfortunately, the 2014 Subscription only reached 63% of it’s goal, and all hope was lost for the continuation of this toyline and the existence of this figure. The few figures that had been sculpted would be released quarterly as the final figures in the series, and that would be the end of it. But now, low and behold, Mattel has come through with the announcement that we’ll be seeing Doomsday Unleashed releasing this December on MattyCollector.com! The full release(s) from Mattel are below!

Celebrating the official end of the Four Horsemen 6″ DC Universe line, Mattel is excited to partner with Warner Bros. and DC Comics to bring you the long-in-coming “Unleashed” Doomsday figure! He will be available this winter in an amazing window box diorama as a standalone day-of purchase! Images and full details to come, but we couldn’t wait to share this news with our fans! This final figure will celebrate the end of a fantastic toy line.

So basically a toy we NEVER thought was going to happen. We’ve been trying to find a way to make this figure for years and just felt the line would not not be complete without him. Essentially we have tried every angle possible, from a sub incentive to a con item. Finally we just felt, “go for it” and mocked one up as a “looks like model” in package to demonstrate how great it would look as a celebratory item to honor the ending of the 6″ 4HM line. We really felt a line this great deserved to go out on a high note, even if the sub did not hit the minimum.

The packaging team went all out with an almost 360 window box including a slip case with original art by Dan Jurgens. The package comp with toy was just so beautiful no one could say no and we FINALLY got the green light!

Wow, I don’t think the team has ever tried so hard to get a single figure out. I couldn’t be more proud. This will be without a doubt the final figure in the 6″ line, but what a way to end things?! Doomsday Unleashed will go on sale before the end of the year and will also include the ripped shreds of Superman’s cape wrapped around his hand (removable soft goods!). The fans really showed their support and this is our way of saying thank you to our fans as DCU Classics/signature series heads into the sunset!”
