With the success of ABC’s ‘Once Upon A Time,’ Disney beckons us further ‘Into The Woods’ with this new feature film boasting an all-star cast.

Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (before getting his beanstalk), and Rapunzel all make a brief appearance in the teaser trailer. Rob Marshall (‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,’ ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’) is set to direct this fantastical flight into the fairy tale realm. The film version of the Stephen Sondheim musical features several A-List actors including Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine and Emily Blunt.

If the Brothers Grimm were alive to see this menagerie of images from their writing, they would most likely be overwhelmed with emotion and terror! Imagine their faces as their storybook characters come to life in vivid and terrifying color before their eyes.

Several actors were asked to do a table reading in order to green light the script, Nina Arianda (as The Baker’s Wife)  Christine Baranski (Cinderella’s Stepmother), and Tammy Blanchard (Florinda) with David Garrison as the narrator along with several others. Obviously the ploy worked, and filming and reshooting is well underway.

The teaser trailer is just that, a teaser. It offers no plot details or mush in the way of characters either. What we do see looks like we may be in for a thrill ride in true dark Disney style.

I have watched ‘Once Upon a Time’ and can see the appeal in bringing these stories back in a grand fashion. It will be interesting to see how Rob Marshall envisions these beloved stories. The teaser gives us a glimpse of the costuming and the character makeup, and the roster of top actors should hold our attention as long as the writing is solid and cohesive.

‘Into the Woods’ is set to magically appear on the silver screen on Christmas Day, 2014.
