Some of you may recognize the name Alex Kurtzman for being apart of some of the biggest hits in Nerddom, from the new Star Trek franchise, to Sleepy Hollow, if it’s popular it seems like Kurtzman might have his fingers in it.

Now, it looks like he’s in final talks with Universal to direct the new movie!

It’s cause for people everywhere to rejoice! In 2012, it seemed like a pipe dream after the then-director, Andy Muschett, left the project over creative differences, but now it looks like the immensely popular ‘Mummy’ franchise is coming back to the silver screen. And hey, seeing as Kurtzman has an experience with remakes that have spectacular success, there is just cause to hope that the movie will impress.

The first movie is set to appear in theaters on April 22nd, 2014. Will it be a rehashing of the old one? Well, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the new film “is set in the present and is not a horror play but rather an action-adventure tentpole with horror elements. It will also feature new characters and not rehash previous incarnations.”

“Over the course of developing ‘The Mummy,’ Alex has demonstrated such clarity and passion about this character and mythology,” stated co-president of production Jeff Kirschenbaum. “He knows why ‘The Mummy’ has fascinated us for so long and how to bring that into an inventive, incredible new adventure. It became obvious that he is the perfect choice to be not only one of the narrative engineers of this new vision but its director as well.”

The majority of Kurtzman’s credits are as producer, with his movie-directorial debut being with ‘People Like Us’  (with Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks) in 2012. ‘The Mummy’ will be a bigger budget movie, and it will be interesting to see how Kurtzman will handle the movie out of the office and behind the camera.
