There has been word for quite some time that ‘The Six Million Dollar Man’ was going to be remade from its long running television series and now it seems that a lead is being eyed for the role of Steve Austin. Universal Pictures has been wanting to franchise the series and now they might just be doing that with Mark Wahlberg (‘Ted,’ ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction‘) in the lead role. At this time, it is just a rumor and Universal Pictures has neither confirmed or denied but it could prove an interesting fit for the actor.

In the original series we saw Steve Austin, an astronaut whose body was completely rebuilt after a fatal accident where he became “The Six Million Dollar Man” It wouldn’t surprise me if they have to up that to billion in today’s age of expensive technology. Still with his new super human powers and strength he becomes a special agent for the government.

Maybe they can have him play a double role and cameo as the inventor Cade Yeager from Transformers: Age of Extinction’.

With Peter Berg set to produce and possibly direct and also Harvey Weinstein on board to produce,  it’s only a matter of time before this gets pushed forward. It helps lead credibility to the rumor when Berg recently directed Wahlberg in ‘Lone Survivor’. Of course on the flip side this is a big screen adaptation that has been in the works in one form or another since the mid 90’s. Initially Kevin Smith wrote a script which was turned into a comic book, Jim Carrey was attached to be the star with Todd Phillips directing, also in 2006 Richard Anderson claimed to be a part of a remake.

With all of the rights issues having been worked out in 2011 it seems that the film is finally moving forward. Of course, when that announcement dropped they also said that Leonardo DiCaprio was going to star in the film with Bryan Singer directing.

Just remember if this doesn’t get made or work out right there is always another actor or a reboot for an option. “We can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can make him better than he was. Better, stronger, faster.”
