Columbia continues in its push to somehow bring ‘He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’ to the big screen. The project is based on the classic Mattel toy line and the accompanying Filmation animated series of the 80s. The studio has brought in Jeff Wadlow to rewrite the script which has already passed through several hands including Terry Rossio and John M. Chu who was also attached to direct, but has since departed the project. The movie will be produced by Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch.
Jeff Wadlow wrote and directed ‘Kick Ass 2’ and is attached to ‘X-Force’ for FOX. Wadlow isn’t signed to direct but apparently that could be a possibility depending on how the project progresses.
Columbia has drawn up repeated shortlists of possible directors but since a new or reworked script is now in the works, they may wait until that is further along. But with Wadlow writing and having directed and written ‘Kick-Ass 2’ and doing the same for ‘X-Force’ Wadlow should end up at the top of the list.
This movie has been in development since 2009 and has been plagued with issues during the entire development process. 80s toy properties as movies have been hit or miss, but ‘Masters of the Universe’ still has a loyal following and has maintained something of a presence in the world of collectibles. It could have a better shot than ‘Battleship’.
Would you like to see ‘He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’ movie? How do you think Wadlow will do in charge?
