Last year it was announced that ‘12 Monkeys‘ was coming to Syfy as a pilot with an option to make it a series much like how ‘Battlestar Galactica’ was ordered. It now looks as if the network has decided to skip that system and give it a straight to series order! With leads and a showrunner cast last November, things have been looking up for the show’s production but this little surprise has confirmed it.
Set to premiere in January 2015, the series has a first season 13-episode now set. Fans of the film and now series about a time traveler from a post apocalyptic world who has been sent to the past to find the source of the plague which has decimated mankind and possibly destroy it should be happy to see this being told as an ongoing story. It really is a good format for a long term time travel story so I hope they are able to pull off the scripting that it’ll require.
The new network president, Dave Howe, seems to really want to return the network to its science fiction and fantasy roots and the fans who want to see more shows like this should be happy if that ends up being the case. According to Howe,
“12 Monkeys is a captivating time travel adventure and high stakes race against the clock. We are thrilled to add it to our slate of engaging and thought-provoking new scripted projects including the recently announced event series Ascension and the second season renewal of Helix from Ron Moore.”
This makes the second apocalyptic movie that is being turned to a series on Syfy as the film ‘Legion’ is being turned into the series ‘Dominion which is due in June of this year.
