Recently we had heard a pretty big plot rumor for ‘Terminator: Genesis’ that made it sound as if they were making a sequel that rebooted the series with time travel. Now we don’t know for sure if the script by Laeta Kalogridis (‘Shutter Island’, ‘Night Watch’) and Patrick Lussier (‘Drive Angry’, ‘Dracula 2000’) is made up primarily of that or not, but we did find some new plot details that came along with a wonderful piece of casting news.

So what kind of casting am I excited for? Well it’s the very fact that J.K. Simmons (‘Spider-Man’, ‘The Closer’) is joining the film’s cast! I’ve been dying to see J.K. take on larger roles ever since his outstanding performance as J. Jonah Jameson in Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and can’t wait to see what he does here. It looks as if he is attached to be an “alcoholic detective” that has been spending the better part of three decades following Sarah Connor ever since the first appearance of a Terminator. Who could that mean? Well if you take into account that the first Terminator is now 30 years old and this could be a detective from that case.

Extrapolating further from this, it could be that Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator model survived the dip at the end of ‘Terminator 2’ or a change in the timeline prevents him from going there and that could explain how he is an older looking terminator. I’m sure it could be built into his programming for his physical appearance to appear to age. There is a lot of guesswork and assumptions there but it could explain why we are revisiting key points in the past if J.K.’s character is explaining what he has seen over the years to someone, possibly even to Sarah Connor herself.

Terminator: Genesis stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke, and Jai Courtney. The film is scheduled to open in U.S. theaters on July 1st, 2015.
