There has been a rumor that ‘Batman Vs. Superman‘ was going to be tied to ‘The Dark Knight Returns‘. This assumption is based on the combination of Harry Lennix (‘Man of Steel‘, ‘The Matrix Revolutions’) reading from Frank Miller’s legendary comic during the announcement of the film at last year’s Comic-Con as well as the casting of an older Batman. Even with these two teases, it looks like Zack Snyder is putting all of these rumors to rest.
While making the rounds to promote his upcoming film that he co-wrote and produced, ‘300: Rise of an Empire’, Snyder has been asked questions about the sequel to his last blockbuster. Teasers of other plots aside, it looks like we’re not going to be getting an existing story playing out on screen. According to Snyder, what we are going to get is the first original live action Batman and Superman story on screen ever. We all know we’ll be getting a few other superheroes in there as well but the main focus is, of course, DC’s two greatest legends. As Snyder explains:
[The movie] literally takes the “Man of Steel” and “Batman” universes and explodes them. You’re not as tied to the mythology. In Man of Steel, we had to create an origin story, a mythology, and there’s a lot of energy into that, which we love doing. Don’t get me wrong. But when you think about how fun it is too — now that you’ve got these characters — to now let ‘em loose. That’s fun!
Now that’s not necessarily a reason to worry. While many might argue that ‘Man of Steel’ wasn’t a good Superman story it was a summer blockbuster that gave us an original mythos. It’s hard to know what to feel about this. ‘Man of Steel’ had mixed reviews but at the same time Nolan’s trilogy was also original even if it borrowed bits and pieces from existing storylines.
What do you think of Snyder making an original film? Is this surprising with the early ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ rumors or was it what you expected after the first film?
