We had previously heard about a spin-off of fan favorite ‘The Walking Dead’ from it’s creator, Robert Kirkman. Since that announcement, there has been only speculation on what it may be about but we’ve finally gotten a few details. While the series was initially looking to be launched in 2015, it’s currently so early in development I suspect we won’t be seeing much on it for awhile. Charlie Collier and Joel Stillerman, executives at AMC, recently chimed in on the matter.
According to Stillerman:
“That show is not as far along. Robert has some things on his plate. He continues to write every issue of the comic and hasn’t finished season four of The Walking Dead, which he is very intimately involved with and will continue to be. That’s really in the incubation stages. The one thing that I’ll share is just an anecdote that Robert shared with us. He has such a specific vision that he laid out really clearly in the first issue of the comic book. And I encourage anybody who’s interested in the show to go read the note that he wrote in the first issue of the comic. His motivation for telling that story was so clear and so powerful, and it served as such a great north star for the show. We kicked around a few ideas, but primarily what he’s working on is, what is the idea that gives [him] as clear a mandate to make another version of this show as [he] had for the first one? What is going on [now] is a more philosophical discussion over why there should be another version of the show. Once we answer that, we’ll zero in on the specific creative.”
While they were asked if the show was fully green-lit Stillerman said that “It’s in development”. Collier added:
“What we want to do is not diminish the mothership. What we want to do is find something that everyone involved feels as passionately about as being a unique vehicle and unique enterprise as compared to the original series. We’ll take our time, and we’ll do it right.”
To me that sounds like the initially planned 2015 release might be getting pushed back a little to ‘do it right’ as the plot for the show itself doesn’t sound all of that ironed out. Kirkman has his hands in a lot of pies right now with ‘The Walking Dead’ (comic, television show, lawsuits, and conventions) which doesn’t even count what he’s doing with his ‘Invincible’ comic or his upcoming release of ‘Outcast‘ or the Cinemax TV series that will be based off of it. With all of that on his plate you have to wonder what kind of time he’s putting into the overview of this spin-off.
Do you think this delayed on a spin-off is a good thing that it is delayed to make sure it is done right or is this just a sign of being bogged down by development Hell that could keep the show from ever getting off the ground? Share your thoughts below!
