Hoping to create a buzz, Syfy is following the past successes of shows that have released either the full or at least a good portion of the pilot episode prior to their official debut to get tv audiences hooked.  Today, they have released the first 15 minutes of their new series ‘Helix’ and we are hooked!

‘Helix’ is from the creator of the reboot ‘Battlestar Galactica’ series, Ron Moore, and one of his first sci-fi ventures since the conclusion of the prequel spinoff ‘Caprica’ (he is also working on the Starz adaptation of ‘Outlander’).  The series is an intense thriller about a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control who travel to the high-tech research facility, Arctic Biosystems, to investigate a possible disease outbreak, only to find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle that may hold the key to mankind’s salvation or total annihilation. However, the lethal threat is just the tip of the iceberg, and as the virus evolves, the chilling truth begins to unravel.

The series stars Billy Cambell  (‘The Killing’, ‘The 4400’) as Dr. Alan Farragut, leader of the Centers for Disease Control outbreak field team called upon to investigate and control a potential outbreak. Hirouki Sanada (‘The Wolverine’, ’47 Ronin’) also stars as Dr. Hiroshi Hatake, director of Arctic Biosystems and its mysterious viral research program.  ‘Helix’ also stars Kyra Zagorsky (‘Supernatural’, ‘Falling Skies’) as Dr. Julia Walker, Mark Ghanimé (‘Emily Owens, M.D.’, ‘Arrow’) as Major Sergio Balleseros, Jordan Hayes (‘House at the End of the Street’) as Dr. Sarah Jordan, Meegwun Fairbrother as Daniel Aerov, Catherine Lemieux (‘White House Down’) as Dr. Doreen Boyle and Neil Napier (‘Riddick’) as Dr. Peter Farragut.

Created by Cameron Porsandeh, who is also an executive producer and who scribed the pilot episode, ‘Helix’ has an impressive tier backing the project. Along with Moore and Poirsandeh, Lynda Obst (‘Contact’, ‘Interstellar’) and Steven Maeda (‘Lost’, ‘The X-Files’) will also be wearing the executive producer hat alongside them.

Check out the first 15 minutes below and then let us know in the comments what you think? Will this be a series that you’ll watch or does it make you wish ‘Eureka’ was never cancelled?

‘Helix’ premieres next Friday, Jan. 10 at 10 PM ET on Syfy.
