Sony announced that they wanted to expand the world of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and there have been rumors swirling for a while now that the Sinister Six would come together in a film– one that most assumed would be in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 4’.  But it looks like the bad guy super group will actually come together in their own movie!  They won’t be alone as Sony also announced plans for Venom to get his own movie!  (No word on which version of Venom they will utilize… probably the most famous, Eddie Brock.)

After Marvel/Disney’s smashing success with its various movies, which all tied together with its heroes assembling as ‘The Avengers’ which in turn, pushed ‘Iron Man 3‘ and ‘Thor: The Dark World‘ to franchise highs, easily out-grossing their prior solo movies.  So now it seems that the studios that acquired the movie rights to certain concepts prior to Marvel forming its own studio are seeking to emulate that world building concept.  Fox is looking to expand its ‘X-Men’ franchise and is rebooting the ‘Fantastic Four’ and has announced that both teams will exist within the same universe.  Now Sony is expanding the Spider-Man universe with these two movies.

And they are entrusting five big name writers to help them build this world.  Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Ed Solomon are tackling ‘Venom’.  Kurtzman and Orci scripted ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ with Jeff Pinkner and the trio are working on the third, which will be released on May 14th, 2018.  Solomon most recently penned the magician thriller ‘Now You See Me’.

Drew Goddard will be tackling ‘The Sinister Six’ script with an eye to direct.  Goddard was recently announced as the showrunner for Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ show and previously directed ‘Cabin In The Woods’.

From the announcement:

The five writers, along with the two producers and Marc Webb, have formed a franchise brain trust to expand the universe for the brand and to develop a continuous tone and thread throughout the films.

The Spider-Man film franchise is one of our studio’s greatest assets. We are thrilled with the creative team we have assembled to delve more deeply into the world that Marc, Avi and Matt have begun to explore in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.  We believe that Marc, Alex, and Drew have uniquely exciting visions for how to expand the Spider-Man universe in each of these upcoming films.

So at least two new spin-offs have been announced, with more surely on the way.  (If they need some ideas of other spin-off movies, they can refer to my list of 10 who I think deserve one.)  It should be interesting to see how Sony and its writers craft these movies starring villains. Are you looking forward to seeing these characters in a starring role?
