Next month, the Asgardian Avenger returns to Midgard as ‘Thor: The Dark World’ finally hits theaters worldwide. And thanks to the plethora of stills, promos, and trailers that we’ve been receiving to hype up the release, fans have a pretty good idea what’s going on in Thor’s next feature film directed by Alan Taylor. However, a new theory has emerged potentially revealing a thicker plot than we initially expected.

According to Comic Book Movie, the most recent TV spot for the next chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that was unveiled during the premiere of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ shows us a fairly troubling scene that may not surprise anyone (but is probably still considered a SPOILER). If you look closely around the 0:42 mark, you’ll see the following:

This scene depicts Malekith the Accursed putting his version of Darth Vader’s force choke on Jane Foster as Loki (left circle) stands back and watches, while at the Dark Elf’s feet lies a defeated Thor (right circle). This potentially indicates that the Trickster God betrayed his brother and sided with the forces of evil once again. If this is true and Malekith joins forces with Loki, then there might be more bad news coming for our heroes.

In the pages of Marvel Comics, when these two baddies join forces, it’s because they are both working for Surtur, the malevolent ruler of Muspelheim and one of Odin’s greatest enemies. Similar to the dynamic between Loki and Thanos in ‘The Avengers’, we may be seeing the pattern repeat itself in that the film’s main villains are actually working for a bigger villain behind the scenes. And since it’s pretty unclear on why Malekith would want to destroy Earth, it makes much more sense for Surtur to enlist him and the God of Mischief to carry out his vendetta against the planet where he was imprisoned within it’s depths for years.

Back when Mads Mikkelsen was in talks for the bad guy role in ‘Thor: The Dark World’, I speculated Sutur’s involvement in the movie, but that scent went dry when talks of Christopher Eccleston and the Dark Elves emerged. However, there was a casting call put out around September of last year that was looking for men to play fire-wielding warriors, so there was a slight chance that the fiery demon would still play a part in Thor’s next battle.

Of course, this is all purely speculation at this point, so be sure to take this with a grain of salt. Still, it would be interesting to see an even bigger bad in play once the movie is released. What do you think are the chances of Surtur being involved? Do you think that the still from the promo really indicates all this, or do you think that it’s the internet reading too much into things again? Let’s hear your thoughts and theories in the comment section.

‘Thor: The Dark World’ starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, and Anthony Hopkins is scheduled to hit theaters on November 8, 2013.
