‘Serenity‘ is officially relaunching over at Dark Horse Comics! That’s right. ladies and gentlemen, taking place directly after the ‘Serenity’ movie the adventures of the Browncoats will be living on. We’re not talking about a ‘Firefly’ board game this time, we’re getting an actual continuation of the story.
The comic with the remaining members of the Serenity dealing with the fallout of what happened in the movie.
With River Tam in the co-pilot chair and a very pregnant Zoe reeling from the death of her husband, Wash, Mal is finding himself and his ship in greater danger than ever.
I’ve been such a huge fan of Dark Horse’s continuation of cancelled or ended series so far that I am looking forward to how they portray the comic series and continue the story line where it left off.
The artist on deck is Georges Jeanty. For those unfamiliar with his work, he did the artwork for Seasons 8 and 9 for the comic book series ‘Buffy’. That’s right, he’s already worked on a successful continuation of a Joss Whedon work. While he’s familiar with working on something Whedon has already created, ‘Serenity’ is going to be a little more difficult to continue. Jeanty will be working with something that has to have continuity compared to something with a fresh start.
“When I was drawing Buffy, I could start from scratch. Sure, I had to keep in-line with how the characters looked, but everything [else] was up for grabs. Sunnydale was destroyed, so I didn’t have to keep in-line with the architecture. With [Serenity], there are seven characters and a ship to consider. When they’re on Serenity — fans know what every inch of that ship looks like, so I have to be very meticulous with my depiction.”
So what else do we know about the series? Not a whole lot. The writer and release date are both still Top Secret at this point. I’m sure we’ll learn more it at next month’s New York Comic-Con, but until that time, the people who run Dark Horse have everything under lock and key and with the likes of the B.P.R.D. in the same house, they absolutely know how to keep a secret.
It’s highly doubtful that we’ll ever see another film or television show that relates to ‘Firefly’, so this is the next best thing in a continuation of the story line. I, for one, am excited, are you? We finally have a chance to see more of The Verse and a continuation and possible conclusion of the story. While I don’t want it to end, I don’t want ‘Serenity’ to be its ending. Are you looking forward to it? Let us know what you think fellow Browncoats!
