‘Doctor Who’ fans are nearly dying from the anticipation of the 10th Doctor and Rose Tyler returning to the show for it’s 50th Anniversary in November, but Billie Piper is keeping busy until that special episode premieres. The former companion will go from traveling in the TARDIS to mingling with the likes of Victor Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, and Count Dracula in Victorian London as she returns to the network where she previously found success with ‘Secret Diary of a Call Girl’.

According to a recent report from Deadline, the actress has joined the cast of ‘Penny Dreadful’, an upcoming psychosexual horror series on Showtime from the ‘Skyfall’ team of John Logan and Sam Mendes. The show created by Logan deals with some of literature’s scariest characters as they meet with alienation in old Londontown. Piper will join an amazing cast already consisting of Josh Hartnett, Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Rory Kinnear, Harry Treadaway, and Reeve Carney. She’ll be playing “an Irish immigrant trying to escape a dark past”, but her character is not given a name, so it’s possible that she could end up being a classic horror icon.

Shooting for the eight-episode series starts in October at Dublin’s Ardmore studios and Juan Antonio Bayona of ‘The Orphanage’ will direct the first two episodes. Currently, the show is scheduled for a spring 2014 premiere.

What do you think of this ‘League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’-esque horror series from the Oscar-winning writer of ‘Gladiator’, ‘The Last Samurai’, and ‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’?
