It’s only fitting that “The Earth’s Mightiest Hero” grace the silver screen, right? And yet while a parade of male super heroes have paraded before our eyes, often in 3D, only a small number of female protagonists have gotten the green light… and unfortunately failed. Will Marvel’s current top lady, who bears the company’s name get the opportunity to regale audiences in a big budget spectacle? Maybe.
Marvel director/producer Louis D’Esposito commented “There’s obviously a drumbeat that is banging louder and louder that we want a female lead superhero. [We] have strong female characters in our films from Black Widow to Pepper Potts to Peggy Carter and you never know. Maybe there’s an offshoot film with one of them. Or Captain Marvel, you know?”
D’Espisito has previously mentioned the prospect of a “Ms. Marvel” movie at Comic-Con only to be informed by the audience that Carol Danvers is now known as “Captain Marvel”, probably something an exec at Marvel should have known.
In the comics, Carol Danvers is a human who gets blasted by an alien device and becomes able to fly, has super strength and energy absorption and manipulation abilities.
Unfortunately, with ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ ‘Thor: The Dark World,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Ant-Man’ already locked in and ‘Dr. Strange’ and ‘Black Panther’ rumored to be coming next, it appears Captain Marvel might need to get in line.
As D’Esposito explains “It’s hard because we have a small group at Marvel. We do two films a year. To get those two films done and to do them right takes a lot of work and manpower. And female-power, obviously. To add a third film and to just put it in the slate right now is difficult. We have these next three, four, five films coming out and that’s what we’re really concentrating on.”
Darn! I suppose they can only make so many super hero flick a year, so Carol will have to wait her turn. Let’s hope the wait isn’t too long! Black Widow kicks butt, but some female needs to headline a super hero movie!
What do you think? Is Captain Marvel box office material? What other female heroes do you think deserve their own movie? Comment below!
