While the biggest news regarding the sequel to ‘Man of Steel’ lately has been the casting of Ben Affleck as Batman, another huge casting announcement has been making it’s rounds as well. Apparently, ‘Breaking Bad’ star Bryan Cranston will be playing Superman’s archrival Lex Luthor. But here’s the thing: He’s actually not. Not yet anyway. Some major outlets have been reporting this as official news, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet, thus making these reports purely rumors at the moment.
Even though he’s expressed some interest in taking the part, there has been no official confirmation regarding the casting of Bryan Cranston as Lex Luthor. The word going around was that Cranston signed a six-picture deal with Warner Bros. to play Big Blue’s bald baddie, but while speaking to the Boston Globe, the award-winning actor revealed that this isn’t the case at the moment. In fact, he sort of suggests that people might be taking this glorified fancast too far:
“This is all news to me. I think that maybe my name is bandied about because I’m known to be bald. ‘What bald guy can we get?’ The reality is they can take any actor and shave his head or put a bald cap on him.”
While I do think that people have been jumping to conclusions and using language that implies something that isn’t actually true, I don’t think people link the man behind Walter White to the role of Lex Luthor simply because he’s bald. He’s a very talented actor with a pretty awesome mean streak that would definitely add some layers to the role. I think everyone just wants this to happen so badly that they’re getting a little overexcited. But for all we know, all of this buzz may lead to actual talks between the two parties and this rumor may become a reality. You never know what will happen in Hollywood.
Do you think that WB should just go ahead and cast Bryan Cranston as Lex Luthor? Are there any other actors who you think would be a good fit for the role? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments below!
The currently untitled Batman/Superman movie starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, and Diane Lane will be released on July 17, 2015.
