Joss Whedon’s top pick to play the probability-altering Scarlet Witch in the highly anticipated ‘Avengers’ sequel, Saoirse Ronan, has apparently passed on the role, leaving producers eying Elizabeth Olsen as the next likely candidate to play the part.  Though she has only appeared in a few films up to this point, she has some high profile projects coming up, including Spike Lee’s ‘Oldboy’ and Gareth Edwards’ ‘Godzilla‘ remake.  Incidentally, ‘Godzilla’ also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who is rumored to be the top pick to portray Quicksilver, the Scarlet Witch’s speedy brother.

While this is the second Marvel film the two siblings will be featured in, Whedon will not be able to reference the super siblings’ origins, i.e. that they are the children of X-Men villain Magneto, since that property is held by Fox, not Marvel/Disney.

Whedon previously spoke about the pair, saying “You know, they had a rough beginning. They’re interesting to me because they sort of represent the part of the world that wouldn’t necessarily agree with The Avengers. So they’re not there to make things easier. I’m not putting any characters in the movie that will make things easier.”

Whedon hasn’t revealed how he will approach these characters.  In the comics, the siblings come from Eastern Europe, having been raised by gypsies.  Wanda/Scarlet Witch can manipulate probability, sometimes with unpredictable results.  Pietro/Quicksilver can run at super speed.  They also have an estranged younger sister, Lorna Dane, also known as the X-Man Polaris, but her rights most likely fall under the mutant franchise.  Wanda eventually married The Vision, her android teammate and mystically gave birth to twins Thomas and William who grew up to become the Young Avengers Speed and Wiccan.
