Giant monsters are about to take over theaters when Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’ premieres this weekend, but the originator is coming back to theaters everywhere in an attempt to reclaim his throne and the title of the biggest, baddest giant around.

Earlier this week, we learned that the Legendary Pictures modern reboot of the classic giant monster film ‘Godzilla’ will have a large presence at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. But now it appears that the massive viral marketing effort has spilled over onto the internet.

A new website has just surfaced called “Godzilla Encounter”. This site features some articles and news clippings about large scale peculiar occurrences, so far specifically in the weather and in the ocean. You can see the first two posts below:

As the report reminds us, director Gareth Edwards is going for a much more real feel for this new Godzilla film, so it’s natural that the viral marketing would reflect that by producing some very realistic situations in these posts. Additionally, I’m sure that you notice the red letters in the headlines. I’m fairly certain that by the end of this campaign, those letters will mean something. But until things become clearer, we’ll just have to wait it out and see where this all goes.

Godzilla is currently filming in Hawaii and while the plot is still under wraps, a news report did manage to get some details about the shoot:

What do you think this new viral marketing for ‘Godzilla’ will lead to? Is it possible that it’s building towards something huge at Comic-Con? Maybe the big guy himself could make his first appearance since the ball started on his latest feature. Go ahead and share your theories in the comments.

‘Godzilla’ starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn, Bryan Cranston, and Sally Hawkins is scheduled to hit theaters on May 16, 2014 in 3D.
