In an interview with MTV News, screenwriter David Goyer confirmed that Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight films, which Goyer co-wrote, do not exist in the universe of The Man of Steel, the new Superman film that is rumored to lead to a larger series of DC Comics movies which, a la Marvel’s The Avengers, could culminate with a Justice League movie.

Refuting rumors that Joseph Gordon-Levitt was making a cameo in The Man of Steel, Goyer stated, “The ‘Dark Knight’ films do not exist in the same universe. Zack [Snyder] has gone on record. The fact that we have Wayne Industries on the satellite, Bruce Wayne exists in this universe.  Lex Luthor exists in this universe. Other metahumans do exist in this universe, so the hope is, depending on how the film does, that we’ll be able to roll into some other films.”

Further, Goyer stated that he would be interested in scripting a Justice League movie.  “If I were offered it, I wouldn’t say no,” he confessed. “Well, what are you going to do after Batman and Superman? How do you top yourself? I can’t go back to Metamorpho after this.”  (Metamorpho could not be reached for comment, but I’m sure he didn’t take kindly to that last barb!)

I don’t think this is a huge spoiler.  I believe most fans said goodbye to the Nolan Batman films with the last movie and didn’t expect Christian Bale or Joseph Gordon-Levitt to actually carry on in any further DC Universe movies.  To be quite honest, I think we can chalk Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern up to a thing of the past as well, as that film underperformed and is largely forgotten at this point.  ‘Man of Steel’ should be a fresh start for the DC film universe, hopefully opening the door for The Flash, Wonder Woman and new takes on Batman and Green Lantern, with the possibility of Martian Manhunter, Cyborg and Aquaman slipping in at some point.

What do you think?  Are you happy or upset that the Nolan Bat films are shelved?  Were you hoping to see either Christian Bale or JGL in a Justice League movie?  Who would you like to see pick up the mantle?  Comment below!
