Now that we’ve reached the opening week for the highly anticipated Man of Steel, Warner Brothers isn’t slacking off on their publicity blitz for the new Superman flick which may… or may not open the door for additional films based on DC Comics’ vast library.  The latest scene depicts one of the most iconic moments from Superman’s history, his parents, more specifically his father Jor-El (Russell Crowe), deciding to send him to Earth in order to survive the destruction of their home planet Krypton.  In this version, however, young Kal-El’s mother, Lara Lor-Van (Ayelet Zurer), expresses reservations, in a twist from the usual interpretations of this scene in prior films and comics.

In this brief scene, both actors turn in exquisite performances.  Crowe is already known to deliver gravitas acting jobs and here he displays the necessary weight and drama.  Zurer expresses a palpable maternal instinct, almost wishing that her son could die with her rather than face the unsure future of flying into space and possibly facing persecution on Earth.  But Jor-El knows that his son will rise to be a god among men and that should he remain with them, he will perish without a chance to live and make a difference.

What do you think?  Did Crowe’s performance measure up to Marlon Brando’s (who garnered top billing for his few minutes’ appearance in Superman: The Movie)?  Did this make you more or less excited for Man of Steel?  Leave a comment below!
