Not too long ago, a ‘Pacific Rim’ featurette discussing the concept of drift theory and how important it was in the piloting of a Jaeger was released. While it is clear that the exterior shots of the Jaegers in motion were produced via CGI, a new featurette for the film now offers an inside look of how the interior Jaeger scenes were captured.

Director Guillermo del Toro seems to have come from the same school of thought as Ridley Scott when it comes to fully creating a set to immerse the actors in. Just as Scott recreated a whole spaceship interior for ‘Prometheus’, del Toro did the same for scenes that involved the actors piloting the Jaegers. From the featurette below, you can see the sets that represented the interior of a Jaeger’s head. They were pretty elaborate and del Toro made sure he didn’t skimp on the lengths it took to make the actors feel like were really inside a mecha. The sets stood four stories high and was set up to simulate the motions of what it really felt like to be in the robot as it was in combat in real time. All this makes for an impressive and realistic looking film that is sure to be one of the big summertime hits.

There is also some new footage not seen yet and one snippet really brought back the old Godzilla movies as it showed a Jaeger and Kaiju fighting in the ocean waters.

I can’t express how excited I am to see this film and it’s not even one that Marvel is involved in! Check out the featurette below and be prepared to be impressed!

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes — a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) — who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Directed by Guillermo del Toro, ‘Pacific Rim’ stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, and Burn Gorman. The film comes to theaters July 12th, 2013.
