The CW has realized that sci-fi shows need a place to call home and is becoming the network where genre geeks can tune in to. One of the shows they are hoping that will catch on as much as ‘Arrow’ has is ‘The Tomorrow People.’

The series is actually a reboot of the 1970’s UK show of the same name that centered on a group of teens with special powers who battle villains with the help of a talking computer named Tim. In this version by Marc Guggenheim (‘Arrow’) and Julie Plec (‘Vampire Diaries’), who are executive producers for the series, ‘The Tomorrow People ‘are “young people from around the world who represent the next stage in human evolution.” Sound a bit like ‘Heroes’ meets ‘Alphas’, doesn’t it?

The trailer doesn’t do much to dispel the ‘Heroes’ meets ‘Alphas’ vibe and even throws in a bit of ‘X’Men’ to boot. We have the new “recruit” Stephen (played by Robbie Amell) who begins to realize his has latent powers that are beginning to emerge (a la ‘X-Men’ mythology). He reluctantly becomes part of a group of other people with extraordinary powers (a la ‘Heroes’) who call themselves Alphas… er… the Tomorrow People.

Since ‘Heroes’ and ‘Alphas’ are both cancelled, the time is right for another show like those to take its place. Both had very strong first seasons, and hopefully the producers have learned from these two series to avoid the sophomore slump.

Most impressive, however, is that the Amell boys will be taking over the CW on Wednesdays as Robbie Amell is the cousin of Stephen who plays Oliver Queen on the series ‘Arrow’ which will be the lead in for ‘The Tomorrow People.’

Best of all, it looks like abs do run in the Amell family!

‘The Tomorrow People’ will air Wednesdays at 9pm on the CW network.
