When it was revealed last year that the beloved Marvel cartoon ‘Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ would be canceled, there was a massive outcry from fans pleading to keep one of the best animated series based on a comic book on the air. Alas, the final nail was driven into the coffin and show was laid to rest, but Head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb revealed that a new show featuring the Avengers would rise to take it’s place. And that’s when ‘Avengers Assemble’ was born.
Previously, we got a look at some promotional images for the upcoming show, as well as the very first TV spot, but neither showed off actual footage from the show. Now, the first trailer has been released and we finally get a glimpse at what we’re in for. Thanks to Collider, you can see the video below:
From the get go, we knew that this new Avengers series would be capitalizing on the success of Joss Whedon’s insanely successful 2012 film ‘The Avengers’, but who knew that it would take it to this level? The trailer makes the show seem like it’s relying too heavily on the movie. That whole speech was practically lifted from Robert Downey Jr.’s dialogue. They even have that shot where the team is standing in a circle and the camera goes around them. I have no problem with using the momentum from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to sell the other elements of the brand, but this might just be too much. The way I see it, this animated series is trying way too hard to be the live-action adaptation and it’s all coming off as forced.
My hope is that ‘Avengers Assemble’ will follow in the footsteps of the comic of the same name and start with the team from the movie but branch off into new, unexplored territory. Or better yet, I hope that the new show doesn’t completely ignore ‘Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ and acts as the sequel series that they built it up to be when it was first announced.
