Remember that Mad Hatter spin off from ‘Once Upon a Time’ that was floating around? Well apparently that idea has gone down the rabbit hole to be replaced by a new spinoff that will take place in Wonderland.

The spinoff will still have the ‘Once Upon a Time’ creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz attached as executive producers and showrunners but the two have also reached out and brought in Zach Estrin and Jane Espenson to help write the treatment.

Both Estrin and Espenson are well versed in the sci-fi/fantasy genre with Estrin having produced and written on such showa as ‘The River’, ‘No Ordinary Family’, ‘Tru Calling’ and ‘Charmed’. Espenson, a fan favorite on Twitter and at comic conventions, already has a connection to ‘Once Upon a Time’ as she is a consulting producer and writer for the series. But it’s her many list of works which include ‘Warehouse 13’, ‘Torchwood: Miracle Day’, ‘Caprica’, ‘Battlestar Galactica’ and ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ (to name a very few) that has endeared her to many fans.

While no longer centering on the Mad Hatter character, the new spinoff is said to take place in Wonderland during a time after the curse was invoked.  We’ll also be seeing Wonderland through the point of view of Alice who, surprisingly, has not yet been introduced into the ‘Once Upon a Time’ world. However, if the producers go the way as previously reported for the proposed Mad Hatter spin-off, we may see her in an upcoming episode which may serve as a backdoor pilot.

Along with Alice, new characters will be introduced such as Amahl (an exotic, soulful and optimistic character)and The Knave (a sardonic adventurer who’s also a man of action, a loner and a heart breaker).  Also, just like in ‘OUAT’, this new pilot will use flashbacks so it’s possible that we’ll be seeing some familiar faces such as Barbara Hershey’s Cora who was revealed to also be the Queen of Hearts in the Wonderland version of ‘Once Upon a Time’.

Katis and Horowitz are currently writing a 15-20 page four scene presentation with input from Estrin and Esperson and production is slated to begin filming on April 7th in Vancouver.

Make sure you come back to ScienceFiction.com as we’ll be keeping you updated on the progress of the Wonderland spinoff.

Will you be watching the spinoff series even without the Mad Hatter as the lead or do you think one fairy tale series is enough?
