After being pushed back nearly a year to be rebranded and retooled, Bryan Singer’s ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ is finally ready to hit theaters this March. A new twist on the classic tale (because that’s what’s in these days), this story follows ‘X-Men: First Class’ and ‘Warm Bodies’ star Nicholas Hoult as the title character of Jack who embarks on an adventure to save a princess and defeat the giants that held her captive. Also featuring the incredible acting talent of Stanley Tucci, Ewan McGregor, and Ian McShane, this film marks the ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ director’s first foray into 3D movie making.

As it’s new official release date approaches, the studio has begun to promote ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ once again. Two months ago, we received a new and improved trailer and now we’re getting the film’s first TV spot, which essentially take the trailer and condenses it for TV. It’s a shame really since Sir Ian McKellan’s monologue from the trailer had to be cut down, but it still retains it’s haunting, yet alluring appeal. Check out the TV spot below, followed by the film’s synopsis:

‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend—and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

From this spot, it looks like this film is going to be a fun family flick, but one thing didn’t sit right with me. While the effects looked good to me, the character design for the giants just doesn’t seem up to par. I mean, take a closer look at this gallery of posters featuring Jack’s foes. Am I the only one who thinks that they could’ve been designed a bit better?

Regardless of the giants, ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ has a lot of potential to be one of those mind-numbing good time movies and it gives us more of the awesome Nicholas Hoult, who I started to forget was British due to his excellent American accent in his recent films.

‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ starring Nicholas Hoult, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, Bill Nighy, Eleanor Tomlinson, and Ewan McGregor hits theaters in 3D and IMAX 3D on March 1, 2013.
