Earlier this week, we received news that Frank Darabont would be writing the final draft of the script for Gareth Edwards’ ‘Godzilla’ for Legendary Pictures. We also heard that a shortlist consisting of Henry Cavill, Scoot McNairy, Caleb Landry Jones, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were being considered for the lead in the film. Unfortunately, JGL passed on the role, likely in favor of the one he did take in ‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For’, so now there’s a new actor in the mix that’s being considered as the favorite, as well as some new plot details.

According to Comic Book Movie, Godzilla won’t be the only monster wreaking havoc in Edwards’ film. In fact, in addition to the iconic character, there will be two new monsters appearing in the film. Also, this version will be very different from the classic Toho Godzilla films. Apparently, the story will follow a soldier and his interaction with the big green lizard and the other monsters. But who might this soldier be?

In a new report from Collider, ‘Kick-Ass’ star Aaron Johnson is now the frontrunner for the lead role in ‘Godzilla’, which is probably that previously mentioned soldier. According to the site, the actor was offered the role, but he likely won’t make a decision until Darabont finishes his draft of the script. In addition to standing out in the superhero flick and it’s upcoming sequel, Johnson garnered some attention with his recent roles in the Academy Award nominated ‘Anna Karenina’ and in ‘Nowhere Boy’ as a young John Lennon.

Production on the film is slated to begin on March 14th, so the final decision of who will star in the newest installment in the classic franchise will probably be made soon.

‘Godzilla’ is scheduled to hit theaters on May 16, 2014.
