For about a month now, the rumor mill has been churning out potential leads for James Gunn’s upcoming film for Marvel, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. The initial list included such names as Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace, and Eddie Redmayne. Then, Garrett Hedlund, James Marsden, and Sullivan Stapleton were added to the pool. More recently, Zachary Levi and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were named as potential actors to fill the shoes of Peter Quill, the leader of the intergalactic peacekeeping force who goes by the codename Star-Lord. Now, yet another name has joined the fray: Lex Luthor.

Okay, not literally the Man of Steel’s arch-nemesis. According to Comic Book Resources, Michael Rosenbaum, who played the villain on the long-running Superman show ‘Smallville’, has read for the lead of this Phase Two film. The news first broke on the actor’s Twitter, where he posted the following:

With the list now at eleven potential choices, Gunn surely has his work cut out for him. There’s a good amount of talent being considered for this role, which is a very good thing since the film may need the star power to go over with those Marvel fans that aren’t quite as familiar with the Guardians. But the question still stands as to who will win the role.

By the sound of his tweet, Rosenbaum has the in since the director is his “buddy”, but it really is anyone’s game at this point. And if things are this heated for Peter Quill, I wonder how casting Rocket Raccoon will go. (I hope Danny DeVito wins out for that one. I’m telling you, it would be awesome.)

If Star-Lord doesn’t work out, maybe Rosenbaum could be Gamora.
