With ‘Iron Man 3’, ‘Thor: The Dark World’, and ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ all moving along swimmingly in various stages of production, another Marvel Phase Two film seems to be switching into gear as well. According to a new report, ‘Super’ director James Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ has started looking at leading men to fill the role of Star-Lord aka Peter Quill, the half human half alien leader of the intergalactic peace-keeping team.

Deadline tells us that Marvel is checking out some hot names to star in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. This list of confirmed actors consists of Joel Edgerton (‘Star Wars: Episode II –Attack of the Clones’, ‘Warrior’, ‘The Thing’), Jack Huston (‘Boardwalk Empire’), Jim Sturgess (‘Across the Universe’, ‘Cloud Atlas’), Lee Pace (‘Pushing Daisies’, ‘The Hobbit’), and Eddie Redmayne (‘Les Miserables’, ‘My Week With Marilyn’). In addition, it’s being said that ‘Tron: Legacy’ star Garrett Hedlund, former X-men leader James Marsden, and Sullivan Stapleton of ‘Gangster Squad’ are in contention as well, but they haven’t been confirmed.

Top Row: Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace
Bottom Row: Sullivan Stapleton, James Marsden, Garret Hedlund, Eddie Redmayne

Out of all those names, I like Joel Edgerton and Jim Sturgess’ chances. I feel like they’d be the best fit based on their previous bodies of work, acting ability, and look. Without a doubt, Pace, Huston, and Redmayne are all very talented actors and they all have tons of buzz surrounding them these days, however, they don’t seem like Star-Lord to me. As for the rumored names, Hedlund and Marsden are both very good choices as well. If they are actually being looked at, then I’d say they have good chances as well, but it still doesn’t sit well with me that Marsden has already played a character in the Marvel Universe. On the flipside, so did Chris Evans and he turned out to be a good fit for both Steve Rogers and Johnny Storm. As always, you never know with Marvel though because they may see something that we fans don’t. Case and point: Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk.
