Syfy has announced that it has acquired the British television series ‘Sinbad’ and will be adding the show to their prime time line up in the spring of next year.

The BBC/Sky 1 HD production has been airing since July in the UK and brings a new take to the mythos of Sinbad. According to Chris Regina, Syfy’s SVP of programming and original movies, who oversaw the acquisition, “When mystical meets muscle, anything can happen in this exciting, action-packed series. With its strong production values and rich story, ‘Sinbad’ will be a terrific addition to our primetime lineup.”

The series stars Elliot Knight as Sinbad, Sophie Okonedo (‘After Earth,’ ‘Aeon Flux’) who plays Razia, Queen of the Water Thieves,  George Harris (‘Harry Potter’ films) as Zalelew, Ashley Walters (‘Speed Racer,’ ‘Outcasts’) as Abdul-Fahim, Estella Daniels (‘Da Vinci’s Demon’s’) and Naveen Andrews (‘Lost,’ ‘Grindhouse’) as Sinbad’s nemesis Lord Akbari. Described as a 21st century take on the classic 8th century iconic hero”, ‘Sinbad’ is considered a revision of the character’s adventures for the modern day audience.

Here’s the official synopsis for the show:

On the run from his home town of Basra and under a curse for a killing that led to the death of his much-loved brother, the streetwise Sinbad finds himself cast out to sea. Surviving a violent and magical storm, both Sinbad and his intriguing fellow ship-mates are forced to band together to face their inner demons, hopes, loves and fears. Our flawed hero embarks on an epic and emotional quest to rid himself of the curse and embrace his destiny. When mystical meets muscle anything can happen.

The series is reminiscent of ‘Hercules’ and ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ which did very well during their run and is still considered a cult favorite. Syfy plans to air the 12 episode first season starting April, 2013.
