The production for M. Night Shyamalan’s post-apocalyptic movie, ‘After Earth, has recently just wrapped and we now have more information about the movie.  Surprisingly, information for this film that stars Will Smith (‘Men in Black 3,’ ‘Independence Day,’ I am Legend’) and his son Jaden (‘Karate Kid,’ ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’) has been kept well under wraps, but a panel to present the film at Comic-Con has now revealed the plot synopsis.

Before you groan about another Shyamalan movie (yes, I realize his last 4 movies were, to put it nicely, not up to par and I won’t even get into discussing about ‘The Last Airbender), ‘After Earth’ does sound like it could be a decent movie. Now before you go reading the plot, I must warn you that it is somewhat spoilery so be forewarned. Anyway, here’s the synopsis:

“In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.”

Basically the film looks like it’s more of a vehicle to highlight Jaden Smith than his dad. With Will Smith’s star power on the rise again with the success of ‘Men in Black 3,’ hopefully fans of the elder Smith won’t be too disappointed if he gets limited screen time. Also starring in the movie are Isabelle Furhman, Zoë Kravitz, and Sophie Okonedo.

‘After Earth’ is one of those rare movies that Shyamalan only directs and has not written. The first draft was scribed by Gary Whitta (‘The Book of Eli’) with Shyamalan doing some revisions afterwards.  Oscar winner Stephen Gaghan (‘Traffic,’ ‘American Gothic’) was then brought in to polish the script.

Although neither the Smiths nor Shyamalan will be at Comic-Con this year, Whitta will be in attendance on the panel along with cinematographer Peter Suschitzky. They will be joined by the writers and co- creators of the comic book ‘After Earth: Innocence’ that will introduce Kitaj and Cypher Raige (the characters portrayed by Jaden and Will respectively) along with Peter David who is writing the prequel ‘After Earth’ novel. The panel will run from 10am-11am in Room 6A.

‘After Earth’ is slated to be in theaters on June 13, 2013.
