The Governor? Present! Michonne? Here! Milton?… WHO? With half the season of ‘The Walking Dead’ already filmed it’s surprising to hear that there’ll be a new guy in town and his name is Milton, an original character not seen in the comic series who will be played by Dallas Roberts.

According to executive producer Robert Kirkman, “Milton is the details guy. He’s the guy that works with the Governor, who is monitoring all situations and is trying to help the Governor make sense of this world that they’re living in. He’s not exactly a scientist, but he’s a smart guy that is trying to find out how zombies behave. Watching him do his little experiments is going to be a lot of fun.”

Roberts, who will be playing the pseudo-scientist, is better known as Owen Cavanaugh in the CBS series ‘The Good Wife’. He’s also starred in the TV shows ‘Rubicon’ and ‘The L Word’ and was seen in the film ‘The Grey’. He will be appearing on the big screen in the movie ‘Shadow People’ which is slated to be out sometime this year.

While a lot of the action on ‘The Walking Dead’ deals with zombie killings, Milton brings something new to the show and to the people of Woodbury. According to show runner Glen Mazzara, he epitomizes the perseverance of someone who is not physically adept but is still trying to stay alive by becoming useful:

“We were examining, ‘How do people survive in this apocalyptic world, and what can people contribute? And we didn’t think it was plausible that every single character we meet is an efficient zombie killer. We just didn’t buy that everyone we know would be active and deft enough to kill every walker. We wanted to show how other people survive, and Dallas has come in and helped us establish that character. He just adds a lot of heart and humanity to Woodbury, which further complicates what that is. That is a real town with real people and real survivors. It’s not necessarily a group of bad guys.”

This is not the first time an original character was introduced to the series. The ever popular Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) was conceived for the show and rumor has it that he has become so well-liked that he will be introduced in an upcoming story arc for the comic series.

Even though Milton is said to be original, he does bare some resemblance to Dr. Eugene Porter, a high school scientist that lacked the fighting ability to go against a zombie and used his intelligence to survive. He crossed paths with Rick in the comic series after the survivors’ encounters with the Governor.

In any case, Milton sounds like a great addition to the town of Woodbury and it will be interesting to see how his brains but not brawn tactics play out in this post-apocalyptic world.

Season 3 of ‘The Walking Dead’ returns to AMC on October 14th.
