While promoting ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ at last year’s SDCC, Steven Spielberg revealed that not only was ‘Jurassic Park 4’ in the works but Mark Protosevich (‘I am Legend,’ ‘Thor,’) was working on a treatment/script draft which Spielberg said was a better story than the one for ‘Jurassic Park III.’ Now, a year later, the movie is moving forward with ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ scribes Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver hired to write the screenplay.

It’s been almost 20 years since the first ‘Jurassic Park’ film was released and more than a decade since Isla Sorna (the second InGen dinosaur lab) was last visited. ‘Jurassic Park 4’ will be produced by Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy but like the last sequel, Spielberg won’t be directing. Last year, ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ director Joe Johnson (who also directed ‘Jurassic Park III’) stated in an interview with Screen Rant that he was currently in negotiations to direct this sequel:

“We are in discussions about ‘Jurassic Park 4.’ The most important thing I can tell you is that it starts a new trilogy that will go off in a different direction — a completely different direction that is very exciting, and different from anything we’ve seen. It starts with the history of the first trilogy, but it spins it off in a completely different direction. That’s all I can tell you.”

Things may have changed since then as currently there are no directors attached to the film.

The first three films have grossed over $1.9 billion worldwide so it’s not that much of surprise that Universal would want to resurrect another sequel.  The decision to have Jaffa and Silver write the screenplay sounds like a good one indeed. Part of the success of ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ was that the story had heart. Add this with the advancements of CGI and motion capture and ‘Jurassic Park 4’ could really take off.

Last December, Kennedy had mentioned that the film could feasibly be released around Christmas 2014 or summer 2015. Now that the screenwriters have been hired, I wouldn’t be doubting her prediction.

Are you ready for another ‘Jurassic Park’ sequel?
