With ‘Iron Man 3’ starting production on the East Coast very soon, we’ve been getting a ton of casting info regarding that film lately, however, Tony Stark isn’t the only Avenger gearing up for another solo film. Chris Hemsworth is getting ready to pull the cape and hammer out of the closet again to step in the shoes of the God of Thunder for ‘Game of Thrones’ director Alan Taylor’s ‘Thor 2’. Already set to return alongside Hemsworth is the entire original cast including Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, and Tom Hiddleston, but what new additions will we see in the coming weeks leading to production time? Well, the first new name to be thrown into the mix has been revealed thanks to Collider– Mads Mikkelsen.

If you’re like me, then you immediately said, “Who?” after reading his name, but once I saw his face and his credits, which include ‘Valhalla Rising’, ‘Clash of the Titans’, and ‘Casino Royale’, he looked familiar. The Danish actor is currently in talks to join Loki as another villainous force that Thor must face. No other details on the role have been unveiled yet, so let the speculation begin.

Though I’m not fully educated on Thor’s entire rogues gallery, my guess is that Mikkelsen will play Surtur, the mortal enemy of Odin who was locked way in the depths of Earth but freed by Loki and set against Odin while he was visiting Thor on Earth. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige did mention previously that “the heart of the movie is also the relationship between Thor and Odin, which does change drastically as it did over the course of the first movie, and picks up and continues from there.” According to Surtur’s bio, the demon plays an important role in the Ragnarok Cycle and the death of Odin, so maybe that will play into the relationship dynamic between father and son, and possibly even adopted son.

‘Thor 2’ begins filming in London in a few months and is set for release on November 15th, 2013.
