Are you kidding me? The movie based on the board game starring Rhianna is actually in the number one slot in Australia, Korea, Belgium, France, Switzerland, and 11 other territories?! You have got to be kidding me!

After opening yesterday in these foreign markets, which is more than a month before opening here in the North America, Peter Berg’s alien action flick ‘Battleship’ is currently grossing about $7.4 million. This means that ‘Battleship’ is beating out ‘Wrath of the Titans’, ‘Titanic 3D’, ‘American Reunion’, and ‘The Hunger Games’ at the box office.

The movie cost about $209 million to make. Deadline says that their sources indicate that the film should easily plow past the $300 million mark overseas alone based on the current trends, especially with the wide international release tomorrow.

Check out these stats.

  • In Australia, ‘Battleship’ is #1 with an early estimate of $1.1 million for the day, which is at the same level as ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Thor’, twice as big as ‘John Carter’, and three times as big as ‘Wrath of the Titans’.
  • In Southeast Asia, where sci-fi thrives, the movie is number one in Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand.
  • For Korea, ‘Battleship’ is the third biggest opening day of all time for an English language film, behind ‘Transformers 3’ and ‘Shrek 3’. It’s also the biggest opening for an English language non-sequel in Korea ever.
  • In Belgium, it opened with $132,000, which is the biggest opening day of 2012 so far.

I’m in complete and utter shock. I know that these sorts of movies do well abroad, but ‘Battleship’? Really? REALLY? I just can’t think of the proper words to express my extreme state of shock after reading this. I guess I have to see this movie now, even though I can already sense that someone will be uttering the phrase, “You sunk our battleship.”

Peter Berg’s ‘Battleship’, a movie based of the Hasbro children’s game, opens on May 18th, 2012. It stars Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna, and Liam Neeson.
