Not surprisingly ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2’ broke many film records. What is surprising though, is that audiences still went to see other films this past weekend.
‘Harry Potter’s’ worldwide debut took in a staggering $476 million. This is now the gold standard to beat for tent-pole film openings.
Here are some of ‘Harry’s’ highlights:
1) $168 million weekend domestic opening beating – ‘The Dark Knight’ – $158 million, ‘Spider-Man 3’- $151 million, ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’ – $142 million & ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest’ – $135 million.
2) Highest single day with $92 million beating – ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’ – $72.7 million, ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ – $68.5 million, ‘The Dark Knight’ – $67.2 million.
3) Biggest international opening ever with $307 million beating – ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ – $262 million.
4) Biggest worldwide opening ever with $476 million beating – ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ – $394 million.
Two other science fiction films still maintained their presence in the top ten.
In it’s third weekend in theaters ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ brought in another $21 million bringing its total domestic box office to $302.8 million. With its international box office now standing at $460 million, the film has now grossed $762 million worldwide thus guaranteeing we will see more Michael Bay films.
Retro-science fiction film ‘Super 8’ hung on to ninth place taking in an additional $1.9 million. This brings its domestic total to $122.2 million and its worldwide total to $173.2 million.
