To get to where you are going, you have to know where you have been. That sentence really sums up the new Young Justice comic book series to go along with the Young Justice animated series on the Cartoon Network.

In issue #3, we meet up with Robin, Kid Flash and Aqualad as they are doing an “off the books” investigation. Robin found a pattern in the untimely deaths of several CEO’s while doing some research into Cadmus. Since the team is new at this point, Robin felt it was wise to exclude Superboy and Miss Martian as they are the less experienced members of the team. Robin also sees it as an excellent team building lesson for the more experienced sidekicks… oops… heroes.

While reading this issue I had to keep reminding myself over and over, this is the beginning. I’ve grown accustomed to the level of teamwork going on in the cartoon, but it is nice to get a glimpse to see the hard work these heroes are putting in. The story is pretty simple, Robin and crew need to stop the League of Shadows from killing a woman and they have to work together to do it. Sounds simple, right?

When you are the member of a team, after a while you fall into sync and anticipate and adapt to any situation. When you get selected for an all-star team, you have to learn to work together with a new team, except this time everyone is the go-to guy/girl and it’s much harder to anticipate and adapt. This was never more true than when Robin and Kid Flash move in to take down the baddie with the old high and low move. Needless to say they both went high and took themselves out of the equation. These heroes sure have a lot to learn.

If you like the cartoon or are just a fan of sidekicks working together then I highly recommend picking up the Young Justice comic book. It is great read for all the comic book fans in your family and a great supplement to the cartoon.
