While some might have been hoping that the upcoming ‘Picard‘ series on CBS All-Access would be a 10-episode run similar to ‘Star Trek: Discovery,’ it is actually looking to be one long story. In fact, Patrick Stewart is going so far as to call it “a 10-hour movie” and that might almost be enough time to not only tell us a new story in the life of Jean-Luc Picard but also give us some background as to what he has been up to since ‘Star Trek: Nemesis.’

It will be fun to see this story fleshed out as after his last appearance as the captain in 2002. Although it will be nice to see Stewart return as the character, he did not always have the same affection with the role expressing, “Although I loved being Picard … I had not realized that there would be a downside to that” and was happy to be done with the franchise. The downside was that everything else he was applying for had directors not seeing Stewart, but Picard. It was hard to get different work.

As to what has changed for him now? They got him in the room just long enough for him to hear the pitch and while he wouldn’t yet share what this new take on the character would be for audiences, there were a few details that he opened up on. These included things such as “They are writing a 10-hour movie” and that where Picard is now in his life might take a while to resolve and that “We’re hoping for more than one season.” With the series set to take place after the decimation of the Romulan Empire in the soft reboot of ‘Star Trek’ all we really know is that he’ll be done with Starfleet and also be “radically altered.”

One thing you shouldn’t hope for though is this Picard to have a beard. We’d previously seen an older Picard sporting one in the series finale of ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ episode “All Good Things”:

“I remember vividly those scenes [in the future], I grew a beard, and they made me up. I looked older than I will be in the upcoming series!”

It sounds like the future being referenced there is one that is a bit further out if it even is still going to happen.
