Warner Brothers is really banking on Margot Robbie‘s portrayal of Harley Quinn. After breaking out in ‘Suicide Squad’, WB reportedly had numerous projects on the table to bring her back to the big screen, with production on ‘Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)’ due to kick off any time now. Not only is Robbie back as Harley, but she is executive producing the movies, a first for one of the stars of a DC superhero franchise. But the latest buzz is that this is just the start, and that Harley Quinn will go on to star in two more pictures– ‘Gotham City Sirens’ and ‘Gotham City Sirens V Birds of Prey’.
‘Gotham City Sirens’ was previously rumored to be in the works, but with ‘Birds of Prey’ moving forward, many assumed that meant that ‘Gotham City Sirens’ wasn’t happening after all. The comic book ‘Gotham City Sirens’ showcased Harley along with fellow bad girls Poison Ivy and Catwoman. Neither of those characters have appeared yet in the modern DC movie, so presumably, this picture will introduce new versions of them. ‘Birds of Prey’ is similar, in that it is bringing in film versions of Black Canary, The Huntress, Renee Montoya and Cassandra Cain, plus villains Black Mask and Victor Zsasz. Then, once a team of female villains is assembled, they will match wits with the female heroes.
In November, Robbie expressed a desire to explore Harley and Ivy’s relationship:
“Yeah. If you read the comics, you know that Poison Ivy and Harley have an intimate relationship. In some comics they convey it as a friendship; in other comics, you can see that they’re actually sexually involved as a couple. I’ve been trying to – I would love to have Poison Ivy thrown into the universe, because the Harley and Poison Ivy relationship is one of my favorite aspects of the comics, so I’m looking to explore that on screen”
Keep in mind, as far as we know, a sequel to ‘Suicide Squad’ is still in some form of development, but with Robbie so busy with these other projects, Harley Quinn may wind up not being included in ‘Suicide Squad 2’. There were also plans to feature Harley and Jared Leto’s Joker in another movie.
Warner Brothers has not confirmed these plans, but it could work, and it was known that other Harley movies were being worked on. So it wouldn’t be a shock to discover that these projects are still in the works.
What do you think? Is this too much Harley Quinn? Or is there never too much?
