Nicolas Cage Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

Clearly, there are going to be a lot of surprises when ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse‘ finally hits theaters, especially with a premise of new Spidey Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) being mentored by older and more experienced Spider-Men he meets from other dimensions. One surprise that already sounds like it has the potential to be a lot of fun is the one involving Nicolas Cage’s role in the film, as he is playing one of the Spider-Men that Miles will run into along the way. While speaking about the role with Entertainment Weekly, Cage said:

“There are multiple Spider-Men in different dimensions that are kind of colliding together. My character’s Spider-Man Noir. He’s really Peter Parker from the ’30s. I tried to channel those noir films with [Humphrey] Bogart, and have those kinds of sounds that he might make with [James] Cagney, or Edward G. Robinson, that kind of way of talking. I tried to give the character that. It was a lot of fun. I think it should be quite funny. The movie definitely has a sense of humor, and that’s a good thing because it’s good for the whole family.”

Of course, there’s also the chance that Cage’s voice-work could fall completely flat and be patently UN-funny, but this movie seems to have a lot going for it, and it looks pretty amazing so far, so I doubt they would drop the ball in this one aspect. And adding Cage to the voice talent cast that already includes Jake Johnson (regular Peter Parker/ Spider-Man), Hailee Steinfeld (Spider-Gwen), Kimiko Glen (Peni Parker), and John Mulaney (Spider-Ham) is just icing on the cake at this point. This movie has A LOT of big talent and is something I am very excited about.

What are your thoughts? Do you like the idea of Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir? Do you think his idea of doing it as Humphrey Bogart sounds like the right direction for the character? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments below!
