the flash

A new trailer for ‘The Flash”s upcoming fifth season was debuted at San Diego Comic-Con and it further embellished the back story of Nora West-Allen, played by Jessica Parker Kennedy, Barry and Iris’ speedster daughter from the future.

Perhaps the biggest reveal is that Nora is the Arrowverse version of DC Comics character, XS, a member of the Legion of Superheroes.  XS lives in the 30th century and has a different alter ego, Jenni Ognats, but that version was a descendant of Barry Allen’s so that part is still intact.  Barry does reveal that another speedster helped him save the crashing plane, so it’s likely that viewers will get to see XS suited up and back in action soon.

Nora does admit that her time-hopping has had some “very bad” effects that she is hoping to correct.  This is familiar territory for ‘Flash’ viewers as the entire first season revolved around Barry having done a very similar thing.

Nora arrives from the future bearing a gift that should delight comic readers.  She presents Barry with his famous Flash ring, a “fan favorite,” as she calls it.  In the comics, Barry keeps his costume super compressed inside the ring and can pop it out whenever he needs a quick change.  It makes no sense, but it was a nifty idea when it was introduced in the 1950s and therefore is still a staple in the comics.

The trailer also teases this season’s Big Bad, Cicada who will be portrayed by Chris Klein.  Cicada is a charismatic blue collar champion who blames superhumans for the loss he has suffered and raises a cult to take them down.  Not heavily featured is Hartley Sawyer, who plays Ralph Dibny the Elongated Man, although presumably he will appear quite a bit as he has been promoted to series regular.
