Chris Klein, best known for (okay, pretty much only known for) playing jock Oz in the ‘American Pie’ movies, is trading in his lovable goofball persona for something more menacing.  He will be playing the Big Bad in the upcoming fifth season of ‘The Flash’ as villain Cicada.

In the comics, Cicada a.k.a. David Hersch is a cult leader, whose followers attempt to kill everyone that The Flash has ever saved.  Their weapon of choice are lightning-shaped daggers.  After being struck by lightning, Cicada became able to steal another person’s life force and add it to his own, making him practically immortal.  On a more personal level, his ultimate goal was to resurrect his dead wife, who– oh yeah– HE MURDERED in the first place!

On the series, he is described as “a grizzled, blue-collar everyman whose family has been torn apart by metahumans [and now] seeks to exterminate the epidemic — one metahuman at a time.”  Klein’s casting was announced on Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con.  Following last season’s The Thinker/Clifford DeVoe (Neil Sandilands), Cicada is the second non-speedster Big Bad on ‘The Flash’.

In recent years, Klein’s most steady role was as Drew on the surreal FX series ‘Wilfred’.  He also popped up in guest appearances on ‘Raising Hope’, ‘The Good Guys’, ‘Franklin & Bash’ and ‘The Grinder’.  He most recently starred in the romantic dramedy ‘The Competition’ and before that in the World War I drama ‘Game of Aces’.

Klein joins Jessica Parker Kennedy (Mystery Girl, Barry and Iris’ daughter from the future) and Hartley Sawyer (Ralph Dibny, the Elongated Man) as new series regulars.

What do you think of this casting?  Can you picture Chris Klein as a deadly cult leader?

Season Five of ‘The Flash’ kicks off on Tuesday, October 9 at 8pm EST.
