‘Smallville’ vet Sam Witwer is joining the cast of ‘Supergirl’ next season as Agent Liberty.  Former CIA agent Benjamin Lockwood was an agent of the paramilitary group the Sons of Liberty, who wanted to overthrow the US government.  He broke away from them when he was ordered to kill politician Pete Ross.  He appeared sporadically after that usually as an ally of Superman’s and even joined the Justice League for a short period.  He didn’t have superpowers but relied on his armored suit.

Unlike the misguided character from the comics, it appears that the ‘Supergirl’ version is the actual leader and mastermind.  I suppose to be a more inclusive hate group (because that makes sense) the Sons of Liberty are renamed the Children of Liberty.  They support a human-first world order and Lockwood is described as “a brilliant orator in the guise of a family man” and that “the scariest thing about him is how easily he can convince people that he’s right.”  Considering that Supergirl herself is an alien, as are President Marsdin and J’Onn J’Onzz, obviously that places them at odds.  Also, due to the fact that part of ‘Supergirl’ Season Three will recast Kara (or at least a version of her) as a Russian pawn, throwing an American-themed character into the mix will surely make sparks fly.

Witwer appeared as Doomsday during the 2008-09 season of ‘Smallville’.  Other alums who have appeared on ‘Supergirl’ include Erica Durance, who played ‘Smallville”s Lois Lane and has appeared on ‘Supergirl’ as Kara’s mother Alura Zor-El and ‘Smallville’s Kara, Laura Vandervoot, who played Indigo, a variation on Brainiac.

Before ‘Smallville’, Witwer appeared as Crashdown on ‘Battlestar Galactica’ and he later voiced various characters including Darth Maul on ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’, ‘Star Wars: Rebels’ and even in ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’, plus several video games. Witwer played Aiden the vampire on ‘Being Human’ and Mr. Hyde on ‘Once Upon A Time’.

To be honest, ‘Smallville’s take on Doomsday was one of the worst adaptations on the series, but not due to Witwer’s performance.  It was just a bad take.  But maybe this will give him a chance to make everyone forget that.
