While David S. Goyer (‘Dark Knight’) is still set to write and an executive produce ‘Masters of the Universe,’ he is no longer slated to direct the movie. It looked like he was set to helm the Sony film but as of November of 2017, a contract had never been worked out, and now a scheduling conflict is preventing this from happening. Between working as an executive producer on Syfy’s ‘Krypton,’ launching Isaac Asimov’s Foundation trilogy as a miniseries, and working on projects such as the ‘Terminator’ reboot and ‘Green Lantern Corps,’ this is one creator with just too much on his plate at the moment.
This could be a painful bump in the road as ‘Masters of the Universe’ was slated to begin production in April.
Some sources have also brought up the fact that he hasn’t directed a big-budget feature film since ‘The Unborn’ which was released back in 2009.
‘Masters of the Universe’ is a big push by Sony and likely Mattel which had a well-received animated run from 1983-1985 and spawned years worth of highly collectible merchandise. A 1987 film and multiple ongoing comic series’ have kept the franchise alive in one form or another.
I just hope they do justice to the characters this time around as it is really easy to mess up both He-Man and Skeletor.
Are you looking forward to seeing ‘Masters of the Universe’ reboot the He-Man brand for the big screen? Do you think this is a tale which would have been better served as an ongoing television series or a set of movies? Would David S. Goyer have been the right choice to direct the film or would you have preferred this to be in the hands of a more experienced director? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
By the power of Grayskull ‘Masters of the Universe’ is set to be released on December 18th, 2019.
