Emma Roberts ruled as the Queen Weeyotch Madison Montgomery on ‘American Horror Story: Coven’ (Season Three) and returned as con artist/psychic Maggie Esmerelda for ‘Freak Show’ (Season Four).  But she was absent from the next two installments because she was busy on Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s series ‘Scream Queens’ on FOX and her ever-rising film career.

But she will be back in the upcoming season of ‘AHS’ subtitled ‘Cult’, but unfortunately, she won’t get to delight camp fans with another Madison Montgomery-esque diva.  She’ll only make one appearance, which probably isn’t a good sign for her character.

After presenting members of the press with three episodes of ‘Cult’, Murphy answered questions and offered a few tidbits about the upcoming iteration of his hit anthology.  Regarding Roberts’ return, he said:

“The funny thing about this group of people that we have on the show, they really are like a family, and I’ve created that within my company,” Murphy told reporters. “Like, you know, people move from show to show.

“Emma was on American Horror Story, and then, she went to Scream Queens, and now she’s back on American Horror Story. She plays a Michigan newscaster named Serina Belinda who is promoted above Adina Porter’s character simply because she’s much more superficial and willing to do what it takes to survive. So, she is here for one episode.

“She did it as a favor. She carved it out in her movie schedule. But it’s really fun to work with people that way. And we really encourage all of the people on our show, like, once you’re in that world, like, okay, if you want to go off and do something else, that’s great, but come back.”

Murphy hopes to entice other previous cast members to return at their leisure.  They have ample opportunity, as ‘AHS’ has already been renewed for two more seasons, one of which should be the ‘Murder House’/’Coven’ crossover Murphy teased a while back.

“You know, it happens with Jessica [Lange]. I’m sure she’ll be back one day.  Kathy Bates went off to do Chuck [Lorre]’s show [Disjointed]. She’ll come back one day. Wants to come back.

“It’s just a very fluid way of working to have a group of people that you love that you can bring back and forth. And the other thing I like to do is to say, ‘What have you always wanted to play?’ to people.

“And that was something that Emma and I had always made a joke about, her being a newscaster. So, her dream finally came true!”

Who else would you like to see return? Angela Bassett?  Lily Rabe?  Lady Gaga?

‘American Horror Story: Cult’ kicks off on September 5 on FX, starring  Sarah Paulson, Cheyenne Jackson, Evan Peters, Billie Lourd and Alison Pill.  Guest stars this season include Adina Porter, Frances Conroy, Emma Roberts, Chaz Bono, Colton Haynes, Billy Eichner, Leslie Grossman, Lena Dunham and Mare Winningham.
